The history

About Nøgne Ø

Nøgne Ø was one of Norway's first producers of craft beer. Knowledge, quality and a constant eagerness to find new flavors make us one of the world's leading producers of craft beer.

Nøgne Ø was started in a garage at Bergermoen in Grimstad in 2002. The following years were characterized by volunteer work, slow sales and little attention to craft beer, and it took a few years before Nøgne Ø could stand on its own two feet. In 2005 we moved to Gamle Rygene Kraftstasjon and in 2016 the new brewery building was opened, next door to Gamle Rygene Kraftstasjon. And still in Grimstad.
With a strong focus on taste, quality, personality and innovation in our products, we have been ranked among the world's 100 best breweries for many years (ratebeer.com), and Nøgne Ø has won hundreds of medals and awards for our brews both at home and abroad.

At Nøgne Ø, we live to create new taste experiences, and the level of innovation is high. In addition to our regular range of around 20 different beers, we brew 25-30 new beers every year. Our focus is always on exploring new flavors, new ingredients and new brewing processes.

Our barrel aging program counts around 240 oak barrels in which we mature beer. Everything from bright and light Saisons to heavy and massive Imperial Stouts. The oak barrels have previously contained red wine, white wine, cognac, sherry, port, whisky, bourbon, aquavit, hot sauce and many other types of spirits and wines. Depending on the beer style and barrel type, the beer matures in oak barrels for anything from 4-6 months to several years.

Nøgne Ø is based in Grimstad in southern Norway, and our name is taken from Henrik Ibsen's epic poem about Terje Vigen. Henrik Ibsen lived in Grimstad in his younger years and later wrote Terje Vigen, where much of the action is set in Grimstad's archipelago.

Nøgne Ø has grown from sales of 300 hl in 2003 to well over 13,000 hl in 2023.
